A little bit of a rant (Hot Topic)

This topic might get interesting, but it is totally my opinion only.   I realize this is not food related AT ALL... but I have a lot of very interesting people who read my blog and I am really interested in your opinions.

So as a lot of you know, I am currently unemployed (I have a few small contracts, but generally unemployed) because of being bumped by someone with more seniority than me.   I'm over it, and enjoying doing this contract work and trying new things (jobs)..  I am also going back to school in September to become a Social Service Worker (because I love helping people).  I have been doing this type of job for nearly 10 years and have loved every second of it.  I decided to take the opportunity to go back to school so I have paper (and a lot of jobs now require some sort of schooling)

So I'm surfing jobs last night.  Up pops two different jobs.

Tim Hortons $12 something per hour and a Social Service Worker $15 per hour.   I AM NOT SAYING TIM HORTONS WORKERS don't deserve this. They 100% deserve every single cent of that.  I am saying that people who work with high risk youth, in schools as education assistants, working shift work in special need's group homes deserve WAY more than $15 per hour. (it is flexible, but generally it's $15 per hour for full time positions... or $20-$25 per hour in the schools (but only 4-5 hours per day)

Where is the logic?
The sad fact is I am going back to school to possibly make less money than I was making at my previous job (which wasn't much).  BUT I really love this field and just wish that the "powers that be" would understand how important these types of jobs are and how valueable people who TRULY want to make this their career, are!

Thoughts?

  1. i feel the same way about my job and my degree im pursuing. when I get my degree ill have to work in a real HR department, but ive seen the salaries they make, and it in no way compares to how much i make at my current job. it makes me wonder why i even bother going back to school when im making more without a degree that i would with a degree....pretty lame.

  2. Hey, thanks for the comment! Blogging and having followers (who sometimes turn into great friends!) are both fun! Do you ever find yourself blogging all of the time? I sure do! Haha, I am addicted! Although, it probably doesn't help that I have a bad case of senioritis and will do ANYTHING to stay away from the hitting the books. Hehe.

About your job issue, remember: money doesn't buy happiness. :) Yes. The world is cruel and unfair, but that's why there are people like you who take notice and maybe even try to make a change. I wish you all the luck in your college/career endeavor.

  3. $15 dollars an hour is a joke - that is NO WHERE near enough for that job! The company must be crazy!

What requirements are there for the job in terms of education and experience?

  4. I hear you. I work really hard doing medical transcription. Accuracy is incredibly important, not to mention knowing medical terminology to catch doctor's mistakes. These are crucial records that can affect patient care that we type up and the pay is really not very good for the knowledge that we are required to have.

  5. I definitely understand where you are coming from. My sister works in day care and works extremely hard every single day. She doesn't get vacation or much sick time and gets paid dirt, but has one of the hardest jobs I could imagine. I feel so bad that this is how it is and even though it is not fair or just, it really takes a commendable person with a HUGE heart to do this type of career.

You must really have a passion and love for people. Good for you! ;)

  6. I understand! Some jobs definitley do not get enough pay for what they actually do ... I like Lauren's example of daycares ... it's hard work and hardly any pay!

You really just have to love what you do and that's what matters most :)

  7. My fiance is a social worker and he should be starting his MSW program in August. Even though its difficult, he loves what he does. If you have any questions for him, let me know and I'll be glad to pass it along.

  8. Thanks for checking out my blog!
Society seems to have ranked jobs in a way that makes no sense to me. Even jobs they pay more than $15 are skewed. Why should a Wall Street Banker be paid more than a teacher?
And don't get me started about the arts: I'm a musician....

  9. Hey first time to your blog. Thanks for commenting on our blog. We look forward in reading more ; )

Sorry about the job, it is unfortunate that jobs that mean a lot or require a long hours are sometimes the ones that do not get paid the best. Hope everything works out for you!

  10. I totally hear you! I graduated from college and got a degree in Graphic Design (Advertising and such) and Fashion Marketing. Right out of college I got a job at a car magazine. Not what I wanted but I would deal. I made $10 an hour. Which is total cheap on their part but it was a job. Well I soon learned that the pressure and hours I was putting in I should be making decent money and this sucked. With the economy sucking I searched for any job. Well I found one as a receptionist at a salon.. making $16 an hour! Holy difference. It just kind of makes you feel like sometimes why do you pay money to get a degree when others are making way more money than you are! Now I moved in with the boy in another state and can't find a job and am completely stressing life right now!!!

  11. Sorry about the unemployment thing. I got a job last week after being unemployed for 6 months so I know your pain.

I'm sorry about your wage frustrations. The jobs that help people become better than who they were yesterday don't get paid nearly enough... I guess what it lacks in monetary compensation it makes up for in feeling rewarded and good about yourself.
